Chief Edwin Clark (1927–2025)

The nation mourns the passing of Chief Edwin Clark, CFR CON, an esteemed statesman, fearless advocate, and a towering figure in Nigerian politics. Born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Chief Clark dedicated his life to the service of his people and the advancement of Nigerian unity, development, and justice. He passed away on February 17, 2025, at the age of 97.

A revered leader of the Ijaw nation, Chief Clark played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of Nigeria. His political journey began in the pre-independence era when he was elected as Councillor for Bomadi in 1953. Over the decades, he held several influential positions, including serving as the Federal Commissioner for Information in 1975 and a senator in the Second Republic. A staunch nationalist, he remained a key voice in advocating for the rights and development of the Niger Delta region.

Chief Clark’s contributions to education were equally profound. As Commissioner for Education in the Mid-Western Region, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Mid-West College of Technology, which later evolved into the University of Benin. His passion for knowledge and empowerment led him to establish Edwin Clark University in 2015, ensuring that future generations have access to quality higher education.

Throughout his life, Chief Clark remained an unwavering voice for justice, democracy, and equity. His fearless stance on national issues, his dedication to the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), and his advocacy for regional development earned him immense respect across political and ethnic divides. He was a staunch defender of the Niger Delta people and fought relentlessly against environmental degradation and marginalization in the oil-rich region.

Beyond politics, Chief Clark was a philanthropist, mentor, and elder statesman who continued to guide and inspire generations of Nigerians. His legacy as a man of integrity, wisdom, and courage will endure in the hearts of those who knew him and in the annals of Nigerian history.

As Nigeria bids farewell to this great icon, we celebrate a life well-lived in service to the nation. Chief Edwin Clark will be remembered not only for his political and educational contributions but also for his steadfastness, his truthfulness, and his indomitable spirit.
